Angry 2004 LeSabre cruise control stopped working

As I was driving this morning, I briefly lost control of my 2004 LeSabre on a rain-slicked interstate. Fortunately, I was able to regain control in time to save the day. Unfortunately, the cruise control stopped working.
The resume-accelerate/set-coast button is non-responsive. For a brief period, the cruise would suddenly engage, but whenever I pressed the R-A/*-C button, it disengaged. Then there was a brief period where the on/off light would stay on and flicker when the button was on.
This has never happened on any car I've owned, and this is my fifth GM vehicle with cruise control. It'* not the end of the world, but it does get tedious and fuel economy is lowered.
I do not want to get rid of the car. I really don't. But I'm afraid this might be it. I'm scared. What can I do?

Well . . .

First: I would suggest that a failure of a minor thing like cruise control probably shouldn't have you concerned about getting rid of the car if you otherwise want to keep it.

Second: Describe what happened when you briefly lost control on the rain-slicked interstate. How fast were you going? What did you need to do to regain control? Was the cruise control activated for any of this?

Welcome aboard!

I've calmed down about not having cruise control.

I was going 70 when I shouldn't have been. I swerved into the left lane and jerked it quickly to the right. Fortunately, that was enough to keep it from going off the road. Also, nobody was near me. I was very fortunate.
